FAQs

How do I become a volunteer?
Volunteer Requirements

  What qualifications do I need?
None other than that you like kids and you have an interest in helping them succeed in school.

What is the time commitment?
We request that our volunteers make a commitment of one hour a week for the school year to provide continuity and consistency for the teachers and students. But many of our volunteers spend several hours a week in the classroom.

What will I be doing in the classroom?
In most cases, the classroom teacher will direct the volunteer. Activities may include individual tutoring, small group instruction, and/or special projects.

Do you have after school programs available?
Yes. After school programs generally utilize volunteers to help students with homework or assist with enrichment activities.

What if there is a day I am unable to volunteer?
If you're sick, call the teacher or the school office. If you have a vacation or an appointment scheduled, please let your teacher know in advance.

How are placements determined?
We work with you to match your interests in grade level, subject, location and time preference with requests for volunteers from schools.

Why are volunteers needed in our schools?
Educational assistance by trained volunteers reinforces and supplements the knowledge and skills taught by teachers. A positive relationship between a mentor and a child helps the child realize his/her potential. School based tutoring and mentoring programs help youth to achieve educational and personal goals and provide guidance for becoming successful adults.

Does MCSV have on-site orientations for companies interested in promoting volunteerism for employees?
Yes, we will gladly conduct on-site orientations.
